APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNORS TO THE CORPORATION

Membership of the Corporation is broadly defined within the Instrument of Government and, within these parameters, the Corporation has agreed the following profile (in addition, the Corporation currently has 1 LSC Members):

  • 14 External Members;
  • 1 Teaching Staff Member (nominated and elected only by the academic staff);
  • 1 Support Staff Member (nominated and elected only by the support staff);
  • 2 Student Members - nominated and elected by the whole student body (with the option to be accompanied to meetings by an appointed "Buddy" who has no voting rights);
  • the Principal and Chief Executive.

This profile seeks to maximise the College's opportunities to make appropriate contacts across the community the College serves. Any Governors may be contacted via the Clerk to the Governors and information about the Corporation is also available from the Clerk. Agenda and minutes of the Corporation and its Committees are held on the College website, the Staff Portal (College intranet), in the Learning Resources Centre and Staff Common Room. The Governance Notice Board (in Reception) displays information for members of the staff, students and the general public. The Corporation's Whistleblowing Policy is also widely publicised.

The Nominations Committee of the Corporation is responsible for membership issues and appointments cannot be made to the Corporation without advice from this Committee, other than for elected Members and the Principal.

PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR CORPORATION MEMBERS

From a College perspective, the need for a focused Governing Body with a range of expertise is essential. Whilst any individuals could contribute positively to the College Governance (subject to formal eligibility), the following skills, attributes, experience and expertise are particularly desirable. The Governors' Role Description/Person Specification are available as a separate document on this website.

In addition, when making recommendations regarding appointments, the Nominations Committee will pay attention to the balance of the Board in terms of gender, age and ethnicity, to ensure that they reflect the local community and College customers.

The College is an accredited Investor in People and is fully committed to Equal Opportunities and had met all criteria as part of the Two Ticks Scheme.

The Corporation is required to have a Nominations Committee and to ensure that it has appropriate rules for procedure. The detailed procedures for the Nominations Committee are available for public scrutiny and are available under "Rules Governing the Appointment of Governors" on this website.
