Higher Education Fees & Support For Studying

General fees information for all courses

You may be required to pay a small Departmental Fee. Any extra outlay you may incur for items such as books or equipment will be outlined at your interview.

Tuition Fees
While you are studying, the Government will pay your fees! From September 2006, if you are a full-time UK or EU undergraduate student, you will not have to pay fees before starting your university level courses or while you are studying. Instead, you will only have to pay fees once you have graduated or left College and are earning a good salary.

For 2008/09 the fees are:
Foundation degree - £1,255 per annum
BA(Hons) Degree - £3,145 per annum

Please note: Different fee arrangements apply to part-time and international students, or international students resident in the UK. Different fee arrangements also apply to some health-related courses such as social work courses. Students or their families can still choose to pay fees at the commencement of their studies.

Student Loan
You will be eligible for a student loan of up to £4,625 per annum if you live away from home and £3,580 per annum if you live at home. You will only start to repay your loan once you have graduated or left College and are earning £15,000 per annum. The amount you will re-pay, will depend on the amount you earn. For example, if you are earning £18,000, you will pay approximately £5.20 per week. You will be charged interest at the rate of inflation, which means that, in real terms, you will not repay more than you borrowed. After 25 years, your debt will be cleared, regardless of how much of it you have repaid.

To apply to for Student Loan, please contact the Local Education Authority where you live. Disabled students may be eligible for a Disabled Students´ Allowance and students with dependents may also be awarded extra financial support.

Maintenance Grant (non-repayable, available to students)
From 2006, new full-time UK and EU students from lower income households will be eligible for a non-repayable Maintenance Grant of up to £2,385 per annum. The exact amount awarded will depend on your family income. If that income is less than £25,000 you are likely to be eligible for a full grant.

Partial grants are likely to be available for those with a household income of between £25,000 and £60,000 per annum. It is only if your family income is more than £60,000 per annum that you will not be eligible for a grant.

Bursary (non-repayable, not available to Foundation Degree or overseas students)
The University of Bedfordshire´s bursary scheme is one of the most generous in the country, at twice the Government´s recommended level. All full-time undergraduate honours degree students taking a course for which the £3,145 fee applies are offered a minimum of £310 per year, regardless of the family income. The cash equivalent for those from families with the lowest incomes will be £820 per annum. This Bursary Scheme is not available to students on Foundation Degrees, as they are already paying a lower fee.

Scholarship (non-repayable, available to Foundation Degree, Honours Degree and overseas students)
The scheme is aimed at the most academically gifted students from families with the lowest income. Awards start at £307.50 per annum. To find out more and to apply visit:
